Undercroft Cellar

Built

c. 1250

Listing

Grade I

Scope

Repair, lighting, furniture

Duration

14 months

Area

180 m²

A vaulted undercroft below a merchant's house, opened up as a dining room and wine store.

A thirteenth-century undercroft below a Georgian townhouse. It had been a coal store, then a wine cellar that flooded every February.

What we did

We traced the water to a blocked medieval drain and opened it again. The vault was cleaned, repointed in lime and lit from the floor. It is now a dining room for twelve, with a wine store behind an iron screen made in our forge.

In the rooms

“We eat down there most nights now. Nobody believes it used to flood.”
